Lanjigarh (Kalahandi), July 2

Like the six Gram Sabhas already held to take a call on mining in Niyamgiri hills, the seventh Gram Sabha held at Phuldumer village in Kalahandi district too rejected the mining proposal unanimously today.niyamgiri xx

The state government has scheduled 12 Gram Sabhas to decided on the issue of mining in the Niyamgiri hills as per the April 18 order of the Supreme Court. The next Gram Sabha is scheduled at Ijrupa village near here tomorrow.

But unhappy with the state government’s decision to restrict the number of Gram Sabhas to 12, the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) is sending a five-member team headed by the deputy secretary in the department on a five-day tour of the area from August 4 to assess the claims that villages other than these 12 may have under the Forest Rights Act as well as claims on religious and cultural rights.
