Bhubaneswar, Nov 4:

The severed head of a person wrapped in a black polythene sheet was recovered from near the Daya river under Dhauli police limits on the outskirts of the Odisha capital this afternoon.

Local police had traced a palm, in the course of a search operation, of the dead near the river yesterday. The recovery of the mutilated body parts of the person has convinced the police it was a case of gruesome murder.

Eyewitnesses spotted a black polythene at the southern side canal road of Daya River. Eyewitnesses also saw stray dogs dragging the polythene and informed the police about it.

Police said there were several serious injury marks on the severed head recovered today. The polythene bag also contained some human flesh, they said.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that head was mutilated to suppress the identity of the deceased. The face was cut several times with a sharp edged weapon and it is almost impossible to identify the deceased,” said a police officer, adding, efforts are on to find out the truth.

Police suspected the deceased might be a 25 year old, who went missing from Khandagiri police limits on November 1. A missing report has been lodged in Khandagiri police station.

“Efforts are on to trace the remaining body parts of the deceased. We are investigating to ascertain the identity of the deceased,” said Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Satyabrata Bhoi.
