The case is only the latest in a series of such cases sex videos uploaded on the internet reported from various places in the state, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Kamakshanagar, Baleswar, Rourkela and Jajpur, though none of them ended in tragedy as the Nemala case did.

The accused, identified as Kamalakanta Malla, allegedly shot acts of love-making with the minor girl surreptitiously on a mobile camera and uploaded the video on the internet.

The family members of the girl alleged that the accused had established a relationship, which later turned physical, with the deceased through deceit.

“When we came to know about the sex video of my daughter being uploaded on the internet, I confronted her and subsequently we identified the man in the act. She could not bear the humiliation that her intimate moments were uploaded on the internet. This is the reason she committed suicide,” the father of the deceased girl said.

The father of the deceased registered an FIR against the perpetrator of the crime with the Nemala police station.

“We have registered a case of unnatural death basing on the FIR. We would investigate the case based on the findings of the autopsy report,” Nemala police station ASI, Jayashree Ojha said.

Meanwhile, police have begun investigation into the incident.

Notably, the incidents of sex videos being uploaded on social media platforms are increasing in the state of late.

In the first week of this month, the Crime Branch of Odisha police registered at least five cases taking suo motu cognisance of such cases being reported from various places in the state.

Five cases were registered across Odisha of which one was registered in Baleswar and two each in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar, Crime Branch ADG, BK Sharma had informed.

The action of the Crime Branch comes in the wake of the Supreme Court taking suo motu cognisance of a letter from Hyderabad-based NGO ‘Prajwala’ and accepting it as a letter petition. The apex court had asked the Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate into the matter after which first arrest was made from Odisha.

The CBI arrested two persons—Kalia Sahu and his associate Bunty– in the VSS Nagar MMS scandal for allegedly circulating sex videos on social media platforms.
