Nayagarh, Oct 22:

Odisha’s Nayagarh district is again in news for wrong reasons. Not for high infant mortality or maternal mortality rates or falling sex ratio but for convening and delivery of so-called justice through a Kangaroo court.

The local police are on the lookout for the head of the Kangaroo court and his other accomplices who drove a teacher to attempt suicide after being subjected to inhumane treatment and humiliation.

According to reports, a primary school teacher, Sridhar Nayak, working with Patachandi Prasad Project Primary School had an altercation with one Biranchi Kumar Pradhan from Bijipur village on October 17. Following this, Sridhar had filed a written complaint with Itamati police station. Jagannath Nayak— husband of Baunsiapada sarpanch— and Jogendranath Swain allegedly took Sridhar from the police station to Balarampur village on the pretext of an amicable solution to the dispute.

The village secretary and head of the Kangaroo court Baridhar Nayak, Mayadhar Nayak and others took Sridhar to the middle of the village and hurled abuses. Later, his limbs were tied and he was thrashed despite his repeated pleas.

The torture didn’t stop there. He was forced to make rounds of the village, crawling on his knees. A sobbing Sridhar asked them to free him but his tormentors were not over yet. He kept begging on their feet but all fell on deaf ears.

They made him pass between the legs of Mayadhar Nayak while kneeling on the ground, on the instructions of Baridhar.

While he was being publicly shamed, some villagers shot the video on a smart phone and the shocking video was uploaded to social media platforms – WhatsApp and Facebook.

When Sridhar came to know about it, he faced ignominy which drove him to attempt suicide. Luckily, he was saved by his family members who filed a complaint with the local police on October 21.

A case (121/16) was registered with Itamati police owing which Mayadhar Pradhan and Sanjay Pradhan were arrested the following day. Other accused are still at large.

“Two persons have been arrested and forwarded to court in connection with the case. The prime accused Baridhar Nayak is on the run and we will apprehend him soon,” Itamati police station IIC Saroj Kumar Sahu said.
