After four days of thorough investigation, the Commissionerate Police today arrested six persons involved in setting ablaze a sand-laden Haiwa truck at Damana square under Chandrasekharpur police limits in Odisha capital after it ran over a youth killing him on the spot on Thursday night.
Charges under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 146 (rioting) of IPC have been pressed against the accused persons – identified as Sridhar Singh, Panda Soren, Rama Chinku, Mahadev Singh, Benudhar Sahu and Rabindra Matia – all of them daily labourers staying in a slum near Damana square.
The police have also apprehended two juveniles in connection with the case. Police sources said the accused persons were involved in instigating the mob after the accident creating a riot-like situation at the spot.
“After verification of video footage collected from the newsmen, we arrested six accused persons involved in the case. They will be forwarded to a court here later in the day. Investigation is still on to nab more people in the case,” said Devi Shankar Pratap, Inspector-in Charge of Chandrasekharpur police station.
Traffic remained disrupted as the agitation continued at the spot for more than two hours after the accident that took place at about 9.30 pm. Irate locals set ablaze the truck and blocked the road connecting Nalco square to Patia and Damana square to Saileshree Vihar.
The speeding Haiwa truck had run over Ashis Kumar, hailing from Bihar, killing him on the spot.
