In view the successful treatment of 4,715 infants at 38 Nutritional Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs) in 27 districts till August this year, the Odisha government had proposed to the Centre the opening of six more NRCs in the state.

Health and Family Welfare minister Damodar Rout has directed the concerned authorities to make the six NRCs operational soon, the sources told OST.

It may be noted that the Centre had opened the first NRC centre under NRHM in Mayurbhanj district in 2009 to provide all treatment facilities to newborn, premature and under-weight infants so as to bring down the infant mortality rate (IMR) among children in the 0-5 age group.

Subsequently, such centres were opened in Kalahandi, Bargarh, Sundargarh and Sambalpur districts.

At present, districts with higher rate of IMR have 2-3 NRCs.
