Sixth accused held in Odisha trader murder case

Keonjhar, July 21:

Police today arrested another accused in the murder of Patel Mahanta, a young trader in Odisha’s Keonjhar town in November last year.

The arrested has been identified as Adhira Kumar Pradhan (29) of Kharsuan in Jharkhand.

Briefing newsmen soon after the arrest of the accused, additional SP Diptikanta Ray, Sadar SDPO Gupteswar Bhoi and IIC of Town police station Subhranshu Sekhar said the police, acting on a tip-off that Pradhan had arrived in the town to commit another crime, arrested him from the bus stand area in the town at about 10 AM.

The accused, during interrogation, admitted to committing the crime after receiving Rs 50,000 supari from Sidhheswar Nayak.

The accused also informed the police about his involvement in another murder in Kharsuan.

Police later forwarded him to the court.

With Pradhan’s arrest, police have so far arrested six accused in the case.

The five accused, who have been arrested earlier, are Mahendra Giri, Dasarath Khilar alias Dhina, Jagabandhu Mahanta, Satyaprasad Mahanta and mastermind of the murder Siddheswar Nayak. All of them are now lodged in Keonjhar jail.

It may be recalled that Gurucharan Mahanta alias Patel (36), a native of Jalapapasi village of Bamebari block, was shot dead by three bike-borne miscreants in broad daylight while he was purchasing winter garments from a shop in front of the State Bank of India (SBI) office building on November 22 last year.
