Slain ‘Maoist’ was involved in civilian killings, say police

The Maoist who was shot dead in an encounter near the Forest Range office in Narayanpatna in Odisha’s Koraput district on Sunday night was a wanted ultra who was involved in a number of civilian killings in Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon area in recent months, police sources said.

The slain Maoist,  identified as Purno Ulluka hailed from the nearby Basanaput village and was an active member of the Koraput-Srikakulam division of the outlawed CPI-Maoist.The encounter took place when a group of 12 ro 15 Maoists were found to be moving towards the venue of Thakurani Yatra which was being celebrated in Narayanpatna, allegedly to punish some local leaders who were instrumental in encouraging people to vote in large numbers in defiance of the Maoist call for poll boycott.
The police intercepted the group near the local Forest range office, following which there was an exchange of fire. Purno was shot dead on the spot while the rest managed to flee the area, police sources said.
According to reliable sources, the police also arrested another Maoist, identified as Mina from the spot of the encounter and seized two guns  from his possession.
Search operations have been intensified in the area following the incident, reports said.
