SOA to train 275 youths in hospitality, tourism

In a bid to bridge the skill gap between the hospitality and tourism sectors, the Siksha O Anusandhan (SOA) University has enlisted 275 youths to undergo an 8-week training in different courses at its School of Hotel Management (SHM).

The program has been undertaken under the central government-sponsored ‘Hunar se Rojgar tak’ scheme to make the youths employable.

It includes an eight-week long full time course in bakery and patisserie, an eight-week full time course in food production, a six-week full time course in food and beverage services and a six-week full time course in housekeeping utility, Assistant Prof, Sasmita Mohanty said.

The program was inaugurated by Prof Malik Mohammed Altaf, principal of the Central government-run Institute of Hotel Management, in the presence of Prof Damodar Acharya, former director of IIT, Kharagpur and presently chairman of the Advisory Committee of SOA University.

The Dean of SHM and Registrar of SOA University Prof BB Pradhan presided over the inaugural function.

Prof Altaf said the Central government had been sponsoring the training program free of cost and the trainees were provided with two sets of uniform, a tool kit and a stipend of Rs 2000 for the eight-week course and Rs 1500 for the six-week course.

Successful trainees would also be provided with certificates at the end of the training, he added.
