SSA failure in Odisha: Students study in thatched shed, MDM cooked in toilet

Nayagarh: Even as government spends crores of amounts under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), there is no basic infrastructure in a primary school in Nayagarh district where the students study in a thatched shed and mid-day meal is cooked in toilet.

The incident was reported in Dimiripadar project primary school in Singarpalli panchayat under Nuagaon education office. The school comprises of 16 students, who study in a makeshift thatched shed as there is no classroom.

According to reports, the foundation stone was laid for construction of classrooms in the project school in 2012. Even after five years, the school is running without classroom. The students in the school attend the class in a thatched shed. During monsoon, the classes are taken in a toilet.

Since there is no kitchen in the school, the meals under mid-day meal programme are prepared in a toilet for serving food to the students. Even the office documents are also kept in the toilet.

Taking classes in a thatched shed and cooking MDM in toilet shows failure of SSA scheme, which was launched by the Centre with an aim to provide education to all the children in the country.

The parents of the students have demanded the education officials to pay attention towards the school for constructing classrooms so that the children can able to have education under a concrete roof.
