Supreme Court awards 4-month jail term, Rs 2,000 to Vijay Mallya

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has sentenced fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya to a four-month jail term and imposed a fine of Rs.2,000 on him  in 2017 contempt of court case.

Mallya was found guilty in the Supreme Court in 2017 for withholding information from the court about transferring USD 40 million to his children in violation of the court’s order.

Latest media reports said the top court asked Mallya to deposit back USD 40 million with interest within four weeks, failing which would lead to attachment of properties.

Worth mentioning here, in 2016, Mallya was accused of defaulting on bank loans that amounted about Rs. 9,000 crore in connection with the now-defunct Kingerfisher. Following that, he fled India and has been residing in the United Kingdom since then.
