“Till now, around Rs 22, 000 crore have been invested in the project. With the commissioning of the first phase of the 6 million tonne steel plant, the total steel production of Tata Steel across the country would mount to 13 million tonne. We aim to finish the commissioning of the second phase by 2019,” Kumar added.

Notably, the finished steel produced from this unit will be used in shipbuilding, defence equipment, electric power infrastructure, and aviation among other areas.

“We have received ‘consent to operate’ certificate from the Odisha state pollution control board (OSPCB) for certain units to operationalise the plant and approval for other units will be granted soon,” he informed.

It may be mentioned that the coke plant takes three months to heat up. Once it is ready to produce coke and sinter plant is operational, the process will start for commission of blast furnace, which will take another three months.

The steel major had signed MoU with the state government in November, 2004 for setting up of the 6 mtpa steel plant at Kalinganagar at an estimated cost of Rs 15,400 crore. However, agitation by the land losers forced the authorities to halt the work till about 2010.

With the delay in implementation of the project, the project cost for the first phase 3 mtpa steel capacity, has mounted to over Rs 25, 000 crore. Of this, about Rs 22,000 crore has already been pumped in to the project.
