Jajpur teacher behind bars for ‘wife torture’

A school teacher, Tapan Kumar Pradhan (35) of Krushnanagar High School at Gamu under Barchana police limits in Jajpur district was arrested Sunday on charge of beating and torturing his wife.

He was absconding since August 20, IIC of Barchana police station Ranjit Kumar Sahu said. Based on a complaint filed by his wife Itishree Pradhan, police arrested Pradhan and forwarded him to court which remanded him to judicial custody , he said.

Itishree had alleged that her husband was torturing her and their six-year-old daughter for the last two years. She had filed a complaint against him before the District Education Officer (DEO) on  August 20  this year.

In her complaint she had alleged , Tapan had allegedly intercepted her while she was on her way to her parental home along with her brother on a motorbike in Chandikhole , dragged her out and thrashed her in public view. He also allegedly beat up her brother, police said.

Quoting the FIR, police said the couple are married for seven years and have a six-year-old daughter. Five years their after marriage, the accused teacher allegedly developed an illicit relationship with a woman employee of a Kalinga Nagar school, something that soured her relationship withe her husband who tortured her every time she raised the issue.

“They are not in good terms with each other for the past two years and Itishree was staying in her parent’s house,” Sahu said.
