Tension erupts in Odisha hospital over newborn’s death

Anandpur, May 31:

Tension ran high at Anandpur hospital in Odisha’s Keonjhar district today after a newborn died there allegedly due to negligence of medical staff.

According to reports, one Pratima Sa of Patarasahi here had given birth to a baby boy at the hospital on Monday. After the delivery, the infant was administered an antibiotic injection by the medical staff. Moments later, the baby took his last breath at the hospital.

The family members of the deceased have alleged that administration of wrong injection led to the death of the newborn. Tension ran high at the hospital following the incident. On being informed, Ghasipura police reached the spot and took the situation under control.

On the other hand, the hospital authorities said that the reason behind the death of the infant can be ascertained only after a probe into the incident.

“My son was not suffering from any disease. He was absolutely fine this morning. A nurse administered an injection to my son following which his body temperature dropped. We immediately called the doctor but he declared my son dead,” the mother of the newborn said.

“On the basis of the allegations of family members of the infant, a probe will be conducted into the incident,” pediatrician of the hospital Krushna Chandra Das said.
