Three dead, 5 critical after drinking contaminated water in Odisha

After drinking polluted water three persons have died, while 5 others are seriously ill in Muniguda block in Rayagada district of Odisha.

The incident which happened on Tuesday after eight persons drank water from a nearby watering hole , three of them died in the hospital while 5 others are fighting for their lives.

The dead are Muniguda block residents Denabandhu Pidikaka (50), Basudev Pidikaka (19) and Baya Nishika (48) of Talapada village.

Eight persons including a three-year-old boy had gone for winnowing paddy in the backyard of a house in the morning. As they felt thirsty during the work, they had gone to a nearby watering hole to drink water. After drinking water, they suffered from stomach pain, accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea.

The villagers admitted them to Muniguda Community Health Centre (CHC). But as their condition became critical, they were shifted to district headquarters hospital where three of them succumbed to their illness.

The family members as well as villagers suspect the water to be contaminated by pesticides.

District Collector Jagannath Mohanty has said that the reason for death will be clear only after a proper investigation into the case.

Water from the stream has been sent for tests and dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Only after the reports come will the exact reason for the death be clear, the official said.
