The accused were identified as Ganesh alias Amarendra Sahoo (27), Manguli alias Ashok Kumar Mohanty (27) and Felu alias Pradeep Mohanty (28), all residents of Badagada. The police have slapped charges under sections 302, 201 and 34 of IPC against the accused.

The prime accused behind the gruesome Prakash Mohanty (28) alias Bubuna is, however, still at large.
Quoting the statements of the accused during the interrogation, Badagada police sources said after taking Basant in a four-wheeler on April 18, the accused persons had a heated argument with the deceased over some issue and beat him to death in a fit of anger. They then took Basant’s body in the same vehicle and threw it in the river at around 12.30 am.

That it was a clear case of murder was proved by the Diatom report (case of drowning), which ruled out the possibility that it could be a case of drowning, given by the State Forensic Laboratory (SFL) here on April 29.

Badagada police had sent the river water from where the body was recovered and the Viscera report of Basant to the city SFL on April 25.

Notably, Prashant Mohanty, brother of the deceased along with family members, had lodged an FIR regarding this matter at the Balianta police on April 23 suspecting his brother had been murdered by some local goons and had demanded a thorough investigation into the matter by the police who had registered an unnatural death into the matter.
