Three hurt in explosion in Puri

Puri, Jan 13:

At least three persons including an infant were injured in an explosion in a slum near the ITI in Penthakatha area of Odisha’s pilgrim town this evening.

The three injured have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital. Condition of one of the injured is critical, hospital sources said.

The explosion occurred when Shyamal Dash, a rag picker and his family members were trying to open a zarda canister from their day’s collection of scrap.

Shyamal’s daughter Mamata and a one-year-old infant have been injured in the explosion.

“A Bengali family which ekes out its livelihood by rag picking had gone to Samagra today and had picked up some scrap material from there. While they were segregating the scrap, a zarda canister blasted and three of them got injured. They have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital and are undergoing treatment,” said Pravat Routray, City DSP Puri.
