Three Maoists surrender in Odisha’s Malkangiri district

Three Maoists today surrendered to the police in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.

The surrendered Maoists include two who were carrying rewards on their heads. The surrendered Maoists have accused the Red brigade of exploiting poor tribal people.

The Maoists who surrendered before the police have been identified as Sina Madhi alias Dula (24) and Arun Kumar Madhi alias Era (35), who carried Rs one lakh reward each on their head announced by state government. The third man who surrendered before the Malkangiri SP was Irma Madkami (20), police said.

Speaking to reporters, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said: “These rebels decided to give up arms and return to social mainstream as they were fed up with violence and felt that the Maoists had deviated from their original ideology.”

Mohapatra said these Maoists had been active in Kalimela, Padia and other areas adding that they were involved in many criminal activities including landmine explosions, loot, murder and blasting of government buildings.

Police said the three had stated that they had got disillusioned with the activities of the Red rebels and felt that the ultras were exploiting and harassing the poor and tribal people instead of working for their welfare.
