Bhubaneswar, Apr 17:

Students of All Odisha Biju Patnaik University of Technology Students’ Association (AOBSA), a students’ organization of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) fighting for rights of the students, staged a demonstration near Master Canteen Square here late on Thursday night condemning alleged police atrocities on agitating technical students earlier in the day.

At least eight students owing allegiance to the AOBSA and zonal ACP AK Patra sustained serious injuries as the students fought a pitched battle in afternoon. All of them were admitted to the Capital Hospital here.

The clash occurred when police tried to stop students who had gone on a rampage after talks between AOBSA and the government on its demands broke down.

“Our students have got serious injuries on their bodies. It was an inhuman attack on the students by police personnel. Our agitation will continue till we get justice over our demands,” said Dipti Ranjan Pal, president of AOBSA.

The students went berserk after a meeting between AOBSA representatives and university authorities, including Vice Chancellor, Comptroller of Examinations and Registrar convened by ET & T minister Sanjay Dasburma failed to come to a conclusion on the demands of the student body.

The demands include early declaration of odd semesters (first, third, fifth and seventh) results, change of scheduled date of even semesters examinations (regular), handing over provisional certificates to the 2010-14 batch students and full-fledged functioning of the BPUT camp office here.

Hundreds of students had protested earlier in the day in front of BPUT camp office where the meeting continued till 2 pm.

Hundreds of aggrieved students then smashed window glasses and ransacked the premises of camp office.

Two platoons of police forces, supervised by zonal ACP AK Patra and RN Sathpathy, swung into action and tried to drive out the students from the camp office when the students retaliated.
