Eminent Odia litterateur Prasanna Mishra passes away

Eminent Odia poet, playwright and novelist Dr Prasanna Mishra is no more.

He passed away at a private nursing home in the CDA area in the city last evening.

He was 74 and is survived by three sons and three daughters.

Dr Mishra had carved a niche for himself in Odia literature and commanded a huge following among readers.

His poetic works include Monica Ra Priya, Truck Dalaare Sanatan, Sastha Mahala Ra Streeloka,Basanta Ra Sketch, Aa Pakhi Feri Aa, Nija Tarafaru Shoka Prastab and Chalibaar Gita.

Asura and Badhi Paani Ra Daanta are testimony to his great skill as a fiction writer.

He was also the author of plays like Prema Khela, Subarna Basudha and Jana Sevak.

Dr Mishra made lasting contributions to the field of children’s literature. All Ghoda Ra Gaatha, Jadi Thaanta Dena and Kahuchi Mu Bijuli are among his most popular creations for children. He was also the editor of the Odia children’s magazine Sisu Lekha.

Born on March 18 in 1941 at Piteipur village under Dhamnagar block in Bhadrak district, Mishra taught Odia Literature in a number of top colleges across the state.

In recognition of his profound contributions to Odia language and literature he was conferred with Adikabi Sarala Das award, Odisha Sahitya Akademy award, Bisuva Puraskar.

Members of Odisha Sahitya Akademy, Utkal Sahitya Samaj and eminent personalities have deeply condoled his death.

Dr Mishra’s last rites would be performed at Sati Choura here today.
