Tourism is limping back to normalcy in Phailin-hit Ganjam with tourists beginning to trickle in to see Gopalpur-on-Sea, Rambha and Tara Tarini temple.

All major hotels, including the state-owned ‘Panthanivas’, have been getting visitors after the authorities cleaned up Gopalpur, said hoteliers. The peak tourism season begins around this time and lasts up to March, they said.

Hotel industry sources said tourists from the USA, Canada, Italy, Korea, Britain, Germany and Belgium have arrived in the last few days after normalcy was restored in the town battered by Cyclone Phailin on October 12.

Executive Officer of Gopalpur NAC R Mishra said power infrastructure in the beach area has been restored on a priority basis for the benefit of the tourists.

Tourists from neighbouring West Bengal and other places have already arrived in Rambha. Before visiting Chilika Lake for boating, these visitors put up in hotels at Rambha and Barkul, said hotel industry sources.

However, tourism department sources said it would take a little time to restore normalcy at Tampara Lake near Chhatrapur as its tourism infrastructure was severely damaged in Cyclone Phailin.
