The commissionerate police is planning to crack down on violation of traffic rules with a particular focus on driving by minors.

Inaugurating a week-long awareness campaign on Road Safety, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr Santosh Bala appealed to parents and teachers not to encourage their kids and wards to drive two wheelers to help ensure a reduction in the number of accidents and causalities.

“At present, our top most priority is to ensure that minors do not drive geared vehicles as they are immature both in age and understanding of traffic rules,” said Bala.

Speaking on the occasion, DCP Traffic S Shyni said since the city traffic wing is facing acute shortage of staff, it had become very difficult to cope with the rising traffic violations. “We have already intimated the Home Department to fill up the post,” said Shyni.

A photo exhibition, a signature campaign and a traffic awareness campaign was conducted to at AG Square to mark the occasion. Celebrities will also join the week-long campaign to sensitize the people on traffic rules. Besides, drawing, essayand debate competitions on road safety were also organized.

The Awareness festival will continue till January 17.

Among others, DCP Nitinjeet Singh and Traffic ACP Binod Das and many senior officials, people from different walks of life participated in the campaign.
