Tragic: Minor girl ends life for ‘Raja’ dress in Odisha

Kendrapara: In a tragic incident, a minor girl committed suicide after her father denied to bring a new dress for upcoming Raja festival in Odisha.

The incident reported from Biraswati village near Ostapur panchayat under Kendrapara block triggered grief among locals in the area.

The poor father Prafulla Swain, who could not afford to buy a dress for her daughter, had to spend Rs 700 for autopsy.

According to reports, the 12 years old girl, who was in Class VII at village school, took extreme step after her father denied to meet her demand to purchase new dress. She ended her life with help her veil in absence of her family members at home yesterday.

Her mother found her hanging from ceiling of the house. She was rushed to Kendrapara district headquarters hospital in critical condition where she was declared dead.

Reports said that the hospital officials had demanded Rs 700 from Prafulla for postmortem of the deceased even though it was free at the hospital.

When asked to CDMO Baishnav Charan Sahoo about the incident, he said that the matter will be probed to find out under which circumstances the money was taken from the deceased’s father for postmortem, which is completely free at the district headquarters hospital.

A case of unnatural death has been registered with Town police in Kendrapara.
