Tragic! Odisha woman dies in daughter’s rescue bid

Malkangiri: Parents can go to any extreme for the wellbeing of their children. A woman in Odisha’s tribal-dominated Malkangiri district risked her life to save her daughter from drowning. However, only the girl could be moved to safety.

This heart-wrenching incident took place this morning at Bandhamamudi village under Chitrakonda block in the district when the deceased woman, identified as Mariamma Bairagi, jumped into the well to save her daughter.

Mariamma had taken her daughter to the village well to get her bathed. To their bad luck, the girl fell into the water body. A panicked Mariamma jumped into it.

“I had gone to work this morning. My younger brother sent a message that my wife fell into the well. I rushed home only to find her dead,” Sahadev Bairagi, the husband of the deceased said.

Worth mentioning, the deceased was having two daughters and had conceived recently.

On the other hand, Mariamma’s father Gurumurty Khara alleged that his daughter has been murdered.

As she had two daughters, Sahadev suspected that she might give birth to another girl. So, he killed her, Khara alleged.
