Transgender Day of Remembrance 2021: Significance, History and all you need to know

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), also known as the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, has been observed annually (from its inception) on November 20 as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia.

It is a day to draw attention to the continued violence endured by transgender people.

Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by a small group including Gwendolyn Ann Smith to memorialize the murder of transgender woman Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts.

In 2010, TDoR was observed in over 185 cities throughout more than 20 countries.

Typically, a TDoR memorial includes a reading of the names of those who lost their lives from November 20 of the former year to November 20 of the current year, and may include other actions, such as candlelight vigils, dedicated church services, marches, art shows, food drives and film screenings.

In 2020, US President Joe Biden recognized the Transgender Day of Remembrance and said the transphobic violence experienced by trans women is intolerable.

Transgender Day of Remembrance wishes to greet others on the occasion:

As a result of intolerance and hate we are celebrating this Transgender Day of Remembrance. Now, it is for us to do the work of the ones who couldn’t be here with us to fight this battle of gender equality.

On this occasion of Transgender Day of Remembrance let us all pay homage to our sisters who aren’t in this world anymore and pray for a community that embraces people of all genders and sexualities.

It’s not our appearance that defines us, but our heart and soul which is mostly ignored by transphobic. While we honour our lost sisters on this Transgender Day of Remembrance, let us hope for a change.

On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, let us all pledge to continue to commemorate our sisters so that the world could never forget the reason that they died for.

The ones we have loved with all our heart cannot ever go away even after losing their lives. They are just by us celebrating this thoughtful occasion of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

If there is a door from heaven then they would be peeking at our sad faces. So, let us honor them with love in our heart and smile in our face on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance.
