The bodies were found stuck in the fishing trawler on the seas of Ishwaripur area in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.

The dead and missing fishermen were aboard a fishing vessel “Suryanarayan” that capsized Sunday near Jambu Island after it was caught in a storm.

“There are five bodies on the trawler. The bodies are entangled in the fishing nets. We hope to recover these bodies, as also those of two other missing fishermen past midnight,” state Sunderban Development Minister Manturam Pakhira, who is with the rescue team, told IANS.

Earlier, Coast Guard Deputy Inspector General D.R. Sharma said the search operation was on in full swing, with several vessels pressed into service.

At least 40 fishing trawlers had gone missing after getting caught in the storm in the Bay of Bengal but 38 were later traced at Odisha’s Dharma port and West Bengal’s Petua Ghat in East Midnapore district. However, “Maharudra” and “Suryanarayan” capsized.

All the 14 fishermen on “Maharudra” have been rescued.
