Tribals owing allegiance to Subarnapur Zilla Adivasi Sangh (SZAS) dressed in traditional tribal attire and carrying traditional weapons in their hands gathered at the Kalyan Mandap ground of the tehsil town of Rampur.

At the public meeting at the Kalyan Mandap ground, tribal leaders in their speeches criticized the district administration and the government for the problems faced by the tribals in their day to day life.

Tribals protested against interference of non-tribals in the affairs of Maa Chandili Pata shrine, their supreme god.

“Some non-adivasis are trying to usurp our community rights by forming a trust for the Maa Chandili Pata shrine. This is a conspiracy to deprive us of our rights. We demand immediate scrapping of the new trust board and vesting of the rights to the adivasis,” said Jogendra Bhoi president SZAS.

Government jobs, provision of homestead lands, establishment of schools and colleges, setting up of Ekalabya Model Schools for tribals and freeing tribal areas of liquor shops were the main demands raised by the tribals at the meeting.

The tribals later submitted a memorandum to the local tehsildar on their demands and marched in a procession through the streets to the beat of drums and tunes of traditional tribal musical instruments.
