Tusker tramples woman to death in Odisha’s Sambalpur

Rairakhol: A woman was reportedly killed in an attack by a tusker in Hemamura village under Luhapanka panchayat in Sambalpur district today evening. The deceased, identified as Prabhati Pradhan (55) of Hemamura village was returning home after collecting firewood from a nearby forest. A tusker, which ventured into the village farmland attacked the woman, trampled her to death.

Following the incident, tension erupted in the village as it was not a lone case when an elephant has strayed into human habitation. A local said the Forest personnel have failed to drive away the elephants from the village.

“The villagers demand that the Forest department immediately tranquilise the tusker and take him elsewhere,” said local sarpanch Ashwini Pradhan. He also demanded immediate disbursal of ex gratia to the family of the deceased.

Till the filing of this report, no official from police and Forest department reached the spot.
