Sources said the tusker entered the village under Sundargarh Sadar police station limits at around 4 AM and damaged a house. Family members ran out of the house in fear.

In the meanwhile, Chudamani Naik (65), a neighbour, who had come outside his house for nature’s call, was chased by the tusker which trampled him to death.

Following information, Forest officials reached the spot and took the body to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital. Later, the Sadar Police sent the body for post mortem.

“The Forest department, which provided Rs 10000 to the family members of the deceased for cremation, would provide the remaining Rs 2.9 lakh as compensation to the family members after completing necessary formalities,” Arjun Behera, DFO, Sundargarh Forest Division, told OST.
