Twin City police holds meeting to ensure hassle-free puja in Odisha capital

In a bid to ensure a hassle-free Durga puja in the Odish capital, Commissionerate Police today discussed issues related to the organisation of the puja with people’s representatives, Durga puja committee members, local police officers and officials of various government departments this evening.

In the preparatory meeting, most of the puja committee members urged the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena and other Government officials to complete repair work of potholed roads and defunct light poles on a war footing.

“BMC should also clean up clogged drains and sanitize the areas surrounding puja pandals,” said a member of the Prashanti Vihar puja committee.

The committees asked the State Government to allow them to use Government land for free. The Siripur Durga Puja committee secretary urged the General Administration (GA) department of the State Government for exemption of rents.

The meeting also discussed issues like uninterrupted power supply and smooth flow of traffic.

Commissioner Dr RP Sharma said Twin City police would begin a special drive to nab habitual offenders, persons with non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and other criminals coming to the city. A drive to check illicit liquor and public drinking in the city liquor shops would also be launched soon, he said.

“We have requested all the Puja Committees to install CCTV cameras at the puja pandals to keep eye on anti-social elements like pick-pockets and snatchers,” said Dr Sharma, adding, “If needed, we will deploy more forces from the Odisha State Armed Police (OSAP) to maintain law and order during the puja.”

Among others, MLA Priyadarshi Mishra, MLA Bijay Kumar Mohanty, Khordha Collector Niranjan Sahu, Additional Commissioner of Police Dr Santosh Bala, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi, Officials of Police Commissionerate and representatives of the various puja committees were present in the meeting.
