Two arrested in Odisha capital for stealing jewelry worth Rs 80 lakh

Commissionerate Police today arrested two persons for their alleged role in looting gold ornaments weighing 2160.66 grams worth about Rs 80 lakhs from a jewelry shop in the Odisha capital.

The accused were identified as Ms Ranjita Nayak (33) of Badagada Brit Colony in the city and Puspa Ranjan Sahu (40) of Chhanagiri under Jankia police limits in Khorda district.

Police has slapped charges under section 408 of IPC against the accused and forwarded them to a local court here today.

According to Kharvela Nagar police, on August 11, Ansuman Hans, director of Ms Lalchand Jewelers, had lodged a complaint with the local police regarding missing of aforesaid quantity of gold ornaments from the counter of their shop located on the Janpath near MasterCanteen square here during a check.

He had also expressed suspicion that Ranjita, who served as an employee in the shop for the last 12 years, could have a hand in misappropriation of the missing jewelry.

Basing on the report, the police registered a case and investigated into it.

During investigation, the police found that Ranjita and Puspa were involved in the loot case.

The police further said the accused have admitted to the crime and have also disclosed that they had mortgaged some of the jewelry in different banks and financial institutions and availed loans against them.

Police have recovered 158 pieces of gold Sankha, two bronze bangles and Rs 2 lakh cash from the accused. Further investigation in the case is in progress, added police.
