Two children killed, 10 injured as school van overturns

Mahanga (Cuttack), Dec 10:

Two childen were killed and more than 10 others injured when a Tata Magic pick-up van  carrying them to school  lost control in the fog and overturned near Asulpur  under Mahanga block in Odisha’s Cuttack district early this morning.

While one of the children, Rajesh Behera died on the spot, the other, identified as Sanjay Sahoo, who was critically injured in the accident, died at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

The pick-up van was carrying students aged between 5-7 years to Odisha Brigade Sainik School, a private school in Nischintakoili, when it met with the accident, reports said.

Angry villagers have kept the body of the deceased child on the road near the Nischintakoili Community Health Centre (CHC) and have blocked the road demanding compensation to the family of the deceased child.

The other injured students have been shifted to the Nischintakoili CHC.

School authorities could not be contacted for their opinion as its  locked.

Eyewitnesses said the pick-up van carrying students was overloaded with as many as 19 students packed into it, which is way beyond its capacity. It was speeding when the driver lost control of the vehicle in the fog and overturned.
