Two die of jaundice in Odisha capital; hospital denies charge

After taking its toll in Sambalpur, Keonjhar and Tangi in Khordha district, killer jaundice has claimed two lives in Odisha’s capital city. Both deaths have taken place at the Capital Hospital, the premier government hospital in the city, in the last 36 hours.

The two deceased have been identified as Kalpana Bhattacharya (70) from Nimapara area and Tutu Nayak (30) of Rajsunakhala in Khordha district.

They were among the more than 30 patients afflicted with the disease undergoing treatment at the hospital, but had to be shifted to the ICU after their condition turned critical. The condition of some other patients too is state to be critical.

Following the death of two patients, panic spread among other jaundice patients admitted to the hospital.

However, Capital Hospital authorities have declined to accept that the two deaths were caused by jaundice pointing out that besides jaundice, they were also suffering from cancer and septicemia.

The Director of Capital Hospital sought to downplay the gravity of the situation saying this type of jaundice is not of the communicable variety and the hospital is fully geared to tackle it.

Hospital authorities have caimed that they are prepared to meet any situation arising out of jaundice. A team of doctors is on alert 24 hours to combat any kind of situation.

“The requisite number of beds and medicines for treating patients has been kept in reserve. Even beds in the ICU are ready for critical patients. Ten beds in the medicine ward have been kept in reserve for meeting any kind emergency situation. Both male and female patients can be accommodated in the facility,” informed Biswabhusan  Patnaik, director Capital Hospital.

Similarly, the hospital is also prepared to handle swine flu patients. The dengue ward has been converted toa  swine flu ward. Fifteen beds have been kept for treating swine flu patients, even a special/separate outpatient department has been opened for the purpose, said Patnaik. He said no one afflicted with swine flu has reported to the hospital .
