A farmer died and another became critically ill after consuming poison allegedly over loan burden in Odisha today.

One Ballav Dharei of Jalapali village under Kantamal block in Boudh district had consumed poison yesterday. His family members had admitted him to Subarnapur district headquarters hospital, where he died today while undergoing treatment.

The kin of the deceased have alleged that he took the extreme step after being unable to repay loan.

In a similar incident, Kalinga Ghadei of Nityanandapur village in Jajpur district was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after consuming poison.

His condition was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.

According to Ghadei's family members, he had taken a loan of Rs 2 lakh this year for agricultural purpose.

He attempted to commit suicide after finding it difficult to repay the loan, they said.
