New Delhi, March 19 :
Two Indian photographers were announced winners of the 2014 Sony World Photography Award, a global photography exhibition, in London Wednesday.
West Bengal-based Arup Ghosh won the "Open People" category with an image titled "Poor God" while Bisheswar Choudhury's "Colourful India", taken on the banks of the Yamuna opposite the Taj Mahal in Agra, won in the "India National Award" section.
Ghosh's photograph is of a young boy, dressed as Hindu god Shiva, whom he met on a local train. He was singing devotional songs and begging for alms. His melodious voice and innocent personality caught the photographer's fancy.
"This is a common view on Indian trains. This boy was charming, bright and gifted with a soulful voice. However, the boy was sad as he failed to earn money in the compartment," Ghosh said in a statement.
"He was singing standing by the train door and I took three shots of the boy before getting off. Before leaving, my daughter presented him an apple and I gave him some money. The boy, visibly happy, then moved to the next compartment," he added.
Works of the winning photographers would be on show at the annual Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London from May 1 to 18.
