Two more distressed farmers end lives in Odisha

Farmer suicide cases continue unabated as two more fresh incidents have been reported from Odisha’s Kalahandi and Bolangir districts.

The farmers allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison due to loan burden and crop loss owing to deficient rainfall in the region.

The deceased have been identified as Nalindra Rana from Gotiya village under Golamunda block in Kalahandi and Bhimraj Meher of Belpada village in Bangomunda area in Bolangir.

On Tuesday, Nalindra Rana was admitted to Dharamgarh hospital in a critical condition after he consumed poison. Later, he was shifted to district headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna where he died late last night.

The family members of the deceased have blamed crop loss and loan burden behind him taking such extreme step.

“He had availed a loan of around Rs 30, 000 from a money lender and was under stress to repay the amount. He have cultivated paddy over a three acre patch and the extensive crop loss had its impact on him. He took to this extreme step by consuming pesticide,” a relative of the deceased said.

In another incident, Bhimraj Meher of Belpada village in Bangomunda area in Bolangir committed suicide late last night due to loan burden. He breathed his last this morning.

As per reports, Meher had taken a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh from bank and private money lenders. The debt-ridden farmer suffered crop loss owing to scanty rainfall. The distressed farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide yesterday.

He was admitted to Khadial Mission Hospital where he died today morning.
