‘Tyre Killers’ to be laid in Odisha’s Twin City to check wrong-side driving

Bhubaneswar: Adopting one more measure to check traffic violation, the Commissionerate Police (CP) has decided to introduce ‘tyre killers’ on roads to curb wrong-side driving that majorly causes road mishaps as well as traffic congestion in the Twin City.

Tyre killers which are sharp metal spike strips will be fixed onto the roads that will cut into tyres of vehicles travelling on wrong sides and puncture the tyres.

Sources said the CP has identified 32 vulnerable spots on total 242 wrong-side points in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. On experimental basis, the tyre killers will be first installed on Bomikhal flyover here. The sharp metal spike barriers have already been installed on roads of Pune, Hyderabad and Noida for curbing of wrong side driving.

Earlier this month, the state Government decided to make helmet mandatory for pillion rider after completion of the three-month relaxation period on February 29. This apart, seat belt for persons travelling in a four-wheeler except the driver will be made compulsory.

The new regulations will be enforced strictly from March 1.
