Ugadi means ‘the beginning of a new age’. Ugadi is celebrated as the New Year in the Deccan region consisting of the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.

It is celebrated on the first day of the Shukla paksha of the month of Chaitra.

Ugadi 2022 Date: April 2, Saturday.

Tithi Begins: April 01, 2022 11:54 AM.

Tithi Ends: April 02, 2022 11:58 AM.

Significance: It marks the beginning of the spring and is symbolic of new life, new hopes and aspirations.

According to mythology, Lord Brahma created the universe on this day.

Rituals: Houses are cleaned and painted on this day. Houses are then decorated with rangolis and fresh flowers.

Mango leaves are tied at the doorstep as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.

People wear new clothes and buy new jewellery on this day.

Dishes made of raw mangoes like ‘pulihora and ‘bobbatlu’ are prepared during Ugadi.

A traditional dish called ‘Ugadi pachchadi’ is prepared on this day with jaggery, green pepper, salt, neem flowers, tamarind and raw mango pieces.

Family reunions, get-together, feasting also take place on this day.

Seeking the blessing of elders is also a part of the ritual.
