Uliburu Mining Scam : Relief for Deepak Gupta’s brother

Champak Gupta, brother of Deepak Gupta, the main accused in the Rs 1800 crore Uliburu mining scam was today granted interim relief from arrest by the Orissa High Court till October 7.

The High Court restrained the Vigilance department from arresting Champak Gupta till October 7 while responding to a writ petition filed by him. The court, on September 11, had extended the interim relief granting protection from arrest to Deepak Gupta’s father Haricharan, mother Kantadevi and wife Neetu, all directors of M/s Deepak Steel and Power Ltd till September 16.

The HC in its earlier order had granted them protection from arrest till September 11 and asked them to depose before the investigating agency.

Incidentally, the Vigilance department had booked Gupta’s parents and wife under several sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and Forest Conservation Act.

The main accused in the scam,  Deepak Gupta was arrested on September 4 and is currently on judicial remand till September 26.
