Rourkela, Nov 23:
GS Prasad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) inaugurated the electrically upgraded grinding machines at the Roll Shop of RSP recently. Many General Managers and senior officers of the plant were present on the occasion.
The Grinding Machines of Roll Shop have been in use for more than 50 years. The electrical installation of these machines was not in good shape due to non-availability of spares and obsolescence of electrics, a press release issued by RSP said adding this was affecting the productivity and quality of Roll Grinding.
Further, these machines were supplied with DC supply generated from MAR (Mercury Arc Rectifier) which was of generation type of the year 1960’s. Neither the spares nor the technology for maintenance of the MAR system is available today, the release added.
The Up gradation of Electrics for Roll Grinding Machines of Roll Shop-I was carried out. The equipment was modified into AC motor system and the project was executed at a total cost of Rs. Rs 2.98 crore.
This modification has led to many benefits that include reduction in energy consumption, better surface finish of the rolls, increase in the availability of Roll Grinding machines, better accuracy in controlling grinding parameters and lesser grinding wheel consumption per year, the release said.
