Ushashree murder case: Charge sheet filed against husband

The Commissionerate Police on Thursday filed a charge sheet against retired Army doctor Somnath Parida (71) at a trial court here in the sensational and brutal Ushashree Parida murder case in IRC Village here in June this year. Dr Parida has been charged under section 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of IPC.

The 70-page charge sheet was filed in the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court here detailing the role of Dr. Parida in the murder and point to point sequence of events of the sordid crime.

The investigating officer of the case, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bishnu Mishra filed the charge sheet in the court here well ahead of the 120-day timeframe allowed under law.

Police have gathered substantial evidence against the offender, which is enough for his conviction during the trial in the Court, said Twin City Commissioner of Police Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma. “We are hopeful that the court will begin hearing the case very soon”, said Sharma.

The police have submitted details of evidences against Parida along with statements of his daughter Lekha and son Lalit, statement of Ushashree’s brother Goutam Samal and Ranjan Samal, his gardener and 20 witnesses in the charge sheet.

This apart, details of the weapon of offence used to kill her and equipment used to chop her body parts seized from his house also find place in the charge sheet. The forensic report of the deceased and the report of the lie detection test conducted on Parida are also part of the charge sheet.

On the other hand, Parida’s counsel Ashok Raj claimed that  police have submitted the charge-sheet against his client in a hurry and the evidence presented is not enough to convict him.

Parida had brutally killed his wife on June 3 this year and cut the body into nearly 300 pieces and had kept the pieces in chemical solutions to preserve it and later decompose it. The incident came to light a full nineteen days after the gruesome murder on June 21 night.
