The incident occurred when police had brought four undertrial prisoners from the jail for production at the local court, sources said. The four undertrials while alighting from the jail van inside the court premises attacked the police and tried to run away. While the three were later captured by the police, one managed to flee the spot. A police constable Debendra Dharua, who sustained injuries on his head in the attack, has been hospitalized, sources added.

“We had brought four undertrial prisoners from jail for production at the court. While we were taking them to the court they managed to give us a slip. We chased them and found them moving towards Manabandh.  They pelted stones at us. While we captured three of them, one managed to escape,” said Jhaman Bhoi, a police constable.

Notably, the four accused were arrested in connection with ganja smuggling.
