Vehicles older than 15 yrs may go off road in Odisha capital

The Odisha Human Rights Commission will soon present a proposal to the Odisha government to push the vehicles, which are older than 15 years, from roads of Bhubaneswar to curb pollution and solve traffic menace.

There are more than nine lakh vehicles plying the city roads of which 25 percent are four wheelers, public and goods carriers. Most of these commercial vehicles are older than 15 years while some of them are even older than 40-45 years.

While there are strict laws in cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad to not allow vehicles older than 15 years inside the city, the local commercial vehicle owners use it to their advantage by buying old vehicles at a throw-away price from those cities and using them here causing pollution and traffic problems in the capital city.

While the state government does not have a plan in place to regulate this as of now, it remains to be seen as to how it is going to react to the proposal of the Commission.
