Half-centuries by SS Sabat and SS Samal helped Odisha take a first innings lead of 47 runs against Kerala on the second day of the Vijay Merchant U-16 tournament here on Thursday.

At close of play, Odisha were 233 for 6 in reply to Kerala’s first innings score of 186.

Resuming at their overnight score at 16 for no loss, Odisha were in trouble as six wickets fell for 109. None of the top order batsmen was able to provide support to opener SS Sabat who was left stranded at the non-striker’s end.

However, SS Samal (57 not out) batted resolutely with Sabat (61 not out) as the duo took the team’s total ahead of Kerala with an unbroken partnership of 124 runs.

For Kerala, Sijomon Joseph and F Fansoo took three and two wickets respectively.
