Kalahandi: Tension prevailed as irate locals staged a road blockade after a woman was allegedly physically assaulted by a doctor in Dharmagarh in Sundargarh district of Odisha on Sunday evening.

The woman, identified as Saraswati Bagh of Kebedi village had gone to Dharmagarh Sub-Divisional Hospital for tubectomy where the doctor on duty Sadanand Panigrahy reportedly misbehaved and beat her during the surgical process.

“The doctor asked me to turn over on my stomach. But I was in pain and couldn’t. He then slapped me multiple times and abused me,” Saraswati told mediapersons, recounting her harrowing experience.

The patient’s husband Parmeshwar Bagh later filed a complaint with Dharmagarh police accusing the doctor of assaulting his wife. “My wife has not eaten anything since yesterday and is crying.  When I asked her, she told me that during operation, the doctor asked her to turn her back. When she could not, he slapped her five six times and then spoke to her in obscene language. She is in a state of shock,” he told mediapersons.

As the news spread triggering public outrage, irate villagers blocked NH 26 and demanded immediate transfer of the doctor. Police reached the spot and pacified the agitators after which the stir was called off. “We will conduct an inquiry and based on the findings will take necessary action,” said Dharmagrah IIC Dipanjali Pradhan.
