Vocational education now mandatory for +2, +3 students in Odisha

The Higher Educational Department of Odisha Government has made vocational education mandatory for +2 and +3 students from this year in order to improve their employability.

All government colleges in the state will have to offer a number of courses for these students to choose one from.

While there are 12 such courses designed for +2 students, there are 10 vocational courses for +3 students. The college authorities will start with 2-6 such courses from this year. They can also choose the courses based on their infrastructure that will facilitate the theory, practical and ease of internship.

The college authorities have been asked to notify the course details they are going to start by May 31.

The courses aimed at +2 students are tourism and travel management, office management, fashion technology, banking, automobile technology, dairy technology, printing technology, horticulture, electrical domestic appliance, information technology, mobile technology, paramedical and healthcare.

Similarly, the courses offered for +3 students are financial literacy and banking, electrical domestic appliance, fashion technology, food processing and preservation, horticulture, information and communication technology, modern office management, printing technology and desktop publication, paramedical healthcare and travel and tourism management.

Ironically, the government has no plans to employ new specialist lecturers or professors to teach these subjects. The colleges will have to make internal arrangements to train the students with their existing strength.

The government has asked the colleges to deploy zoology lecturers to teach dairy technology, home science lecturers to tech fashion technology, physics lecturers to teach automobile technology, botany lecturers to teach horticulture and so on.
