VSSUT student Chinmayee death: Kin allege murder; male friend Pritiman detained

Burla: Family members of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) student Chinmayee Priyadarshini Sahu, whose body was found near power channel here in Odisha’s Sambalpur district today, alleged that she was murdered.

“The body bore marks on neck. My daughter was strangled to death. There was involvement of a youth and others in the murder of my daughter,” said the deceased’s mother who lodged a complaint in this regard with police.

“I had telephoned my daughter at around 9 PM. As the call was received, I heard an unusual sound similar to that of a person getting choked. I disconnected the call and telephoned her again. I heard the same sound during the second call too. Later, we were informed that she jumped into the power channel,” the woman said.

On the other hand, police have detained Chinmayee’s friend Pritiman Dey of BJB Nagar in Bhubaneswar with whom she had gone to the power channel bridge, last night. He was being questioned by the cops in connection with the incident.

It is being alleged that she jumped into the power channel after an altercation with Pritiman.

The deceased’s sister said Pritiman was residing near Chinmayee’s rented house in Bhubaneswar.

According to reports, Chinmayee had come to VSSUT to receive her educational certificate on the occasion of convocation ceremony, yesterday. Later, she went to the power channel bridge with her friend in the evening.

As she went missing after falling into the power channel from the bridge, police and Fire Services personnel rushed to the spot and initiated a search operation to trace her. Her body was recovered near the power channel, this morning.

Further probe by police was underway.
