Wanted criminal injured in encounter in Odisha

A wanted criminal was injured in police encounter early in the morning today in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

Acting on a tip off, police laid a trap to nab dreaded criminal Jagannath Nayak alias Sana Jaga at Kutunikumbha near Mahaguda under Bhanjanagar police limits in the district.

Jaga along with his three associates was travelling in motorcycles on the Mahaguda-Mujaguda road when the cops intercepted them at around 7.30 am. However, the anti-socials hurled a crude bomb and fired at the policemen. In retaliation, police returned fire in which Jaga sustained bullet injury on his left leg. Three policemen have also sustained minor injuries in the incident.

“Sana Jaga has been nabbed following an encounter. He hurled a bomb on police and fired bullets. When police fired in retaliation, Jaga was injured and subsequently nabbed. His three aides have also been detained for further questioning. He used to commit crime in a very violent manner. He was active in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts. Now, people in these districs would heave a shy of relief,” Ganjam SP Asish Singh said.

Around 15 bombs, a pistol, two live bullets and two bikes were seized from the spot following the encounter.

At least 13 cases are registered against Jaga at various police stations in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts, police said.

Jaga hails from Badadanda Sahi in Bhejiput area and was in the most wanted list for his alleged involvement in dacoities, murders and other anti-social activities.

The injured criminal was admitted to Bhanjanagar sub-divisional hospital.
