The alleged suicide of a newly married woman by hanging herself reportedly attributed to demonetization move took place on Sunday under Golanthara police limits in Ganjam district of Odisha.

According to reports, Prabhati (20) daughter of Shiba Mandal of Rangipur Badasahi village and Laxmi Nahak of the same village were in love and the duo tied the nuptial knot on November 9, the next day PM Narendra Modi demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, with the consent of their family.

However, the groom’s family refused to take Rs 1,70,000 dowry money of scrapped notes offered by Prabhati’s father in presence of relatives and guests demanding tenderable notes.

Shiba Mandal had requested some time to exchange the scrapped notes but failed to do so.

Yesterday about 2.30 pm, the victim’s family was informed that Prabhati has committed suicide by tying a Dhoti around her neck and they rushed to son-in-law’s house where the body was found lying on ground.

The nearby circumstances raised doubt of a murder conspiracy instead of suicide and the deceased’s family filed a complaint of dowry torture and killing at Golanthara police station (GPS) following late in paying promised money.

GPS officer in charge and additional Tahasildar Sanatan Mahalik rushed the spot and investigations were on.

Laxmi has admitted before police that she had taken the extreme step at around 9 am. Police are probing other angles of the death, informed a police official.
