The mob set the vehicle ablaze as the ambulance reached two hours late after the initial call made for the service following which the woman succumbed to her injuries on the spot.

The woman was driving a scooterette when the truck hit the vehicle from rear near Taraboi level crossing at around 7 am. Soon after the incident, locals called up emergency ambulance service to rush the victim for medical aid. However, the ambulance allegedly did not reach the spot even after two hours of the accident, reports said.

“We had dialled 108 ambulance service immediately after the accident which took place at around 7 am. The ambulance did not reach the spot even after two hours of the accident. Had it arrived sooner, the girl’s life could have been saved. The government should stop this service when it is of no use to the people,” a local villager said.

The local police rushed to the spot and took the victim to Khurda district headquarters hospital. However, she was declared dead. The post mortem will be performed at the hospital later in the day.

The deceased—Kabita Prusty—was working with a micro-finance company in Khurda. She hailed from Madhupur village in Koska gram panchayat under Khandapada block in Nayagarh district.

The woman in her mid 20s was on her way to attend a meeting at Patnaikia.

As the woman succumbed to her injuries on the spot, the irate locals set ablaze the stone-chips laden truck and blocked the road for hours disrupting the vehicular traffic on the route.

“She had joined the office around 3-4 months ago. She was going to a nearby village early today morning for a meeting when the truck hit her from behind. The ambulance service in the area is not of much use to us as it does not come to our help at times of emergency. If it would have reached on time, she could have got treatment,” a colleague of the deceased said.

The driver of the truck managed to flee the spot after causing the accident.

The road blockade was lifted after police intervened into the matter and persuaded the locals to clear the blockade.
